Festival of the Winds
If you’ve ever wanted to make like Mary Poppins and the Banks kids, and go flying your kite up to the highest height, then each spring in Bondi you can! For one Sunday in September, Bondi’s skies are filled with kites of all shapes and sizes, flown by professional local and international kite flyers, as well as the amateur few too.
Festival of the Winds, Australia’s largest kite flying festival, is held at Bondi Beach every September, and in addition to some of the most colourful and fantastic kites you’re ever likely to see, there’s also plenty more to see and do - from art exhibitions to demonstrations to roaming entertainment to puppet shows and kids entertainment.
If you’d like to try your hand at making your own wondering sky-flying creation, there are also kite making workshops operating throughout the day, where you’ll also be able to take to the skies and test out your own handiwork. And when you’re feeling peckish, you’ll also be able to grab a bite from one of the many food stalls, serving both local and international cuisines.
Since its inception, more than 35 years ago, Bondi’s Festival of the Winds has earned its spot on the roster of Sydney’s most loved festivals, routinely drawing crowds from all over Sydney - and the country - to witness one of the most fun-filled and visually exciting festivals Sydney has to offer.
